FAMILY PLAY THERAPY:
Families play a vital role in their child's healing. Sometimes, the issue may not lie with the individual child but with the entire family system. It may be that the child's emotions or behaviours may be an indicator that the whole family is in need of support. Alternatively, it could be that the family is in need of support due to the child's challenging problem. Either way, children will heal more quickly when families work together with the therapist.
Family members may become involved in the therapy at different times or all together based on the therapist's initial and ongoing assessment of the child. At the very least, the parents will be involved to provide information to the therapist about the issues at hand and any possible underlying factors. The parents and therapist will communicate on an ongoing basis to provide information about any changes or progress for the child.
THERAPLAY:
Theraplay is a form of family play therapy that allows for the building and enhancement of attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. There are four domains within Theraplay that are utilized to promote a healthy caregiver-child relationship including : Structure, Engagement, Nurture, and Challenge. Theraplay is a wonderful, joyful way for children to interact with their family. The therapists works at guiding the caregiver(s) and child(ren) through playful games, soothing activities, and developmentally challenging activities. These activities help a parent and child learn to co-regulate. It is an opportunity for the caregiver to communicate security, safety, and trust to the child. The child, in turn, learns to feel joy, worthy of love, and feel connected. It is a very helpful approach to all families, but especially useful for children who have experienced trauma, those who are in foster care, and those being adopted.
OTHER FAMILY THERAPY MODALITIES AND WAYS OF HEALING:
I have received trainings in other family therapy modalities including: Emotion-Focused Family Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, the Family Healing Model, Indigenous healing practices, and have participated in Narrative Reflecting Teams.
