What is Expressive Arts Therapy?
Expressive arts therapy allows for the processing of thoughts, feelings, and emotions through creative expression. It is with the understanding that we have an innate desire and capacity for human growth, development, and healing. Expressive arts therapy is an inter-modal discipline where the therapist and client move freely between visual arts, dancing/ movement, music, drama/ psychodrama/ storytelling, journalling/ poetry/ bibliotherapy, and phototherapy. It can be used with clients through a specific form of creative art or intermodally flowing freely through the disciplines. I alter my approach based on the clients' needs and comfort level, or through using multiple forms of expression with the same client to deepen the exploration of understanding.
